Essence of Me (1)
DNA for all - well almost

Activity content: aimed at Years 7 - 10 but can be adpated for Year 5 upwards
Taking approximately one hour for the talk and one hour for the practical.

In a simple experiment, students from Year 5 (age 10) upwards extract and bottle their own DNA - the essential molecular blueprint which determines so much of what they are.  This can be used as an introduction to scientific method: in teaching cell structure: right through to a first step in teaching about cloning, DNA fingerprinting and genetically modified organisms.

As a bit of fun at the end, the students can put their DNA in a locket to wear (or give to a loved one!).

Essence of Me (1) addresses QCA Units Sc1A, Sc7A, B, D & Sc9A.
