STEM Centre
The Greater Manchester STEM Centre operates via SETPOINT Greater Manchester, a registered Educational Charity (registration number 1040251) dedicated to promoting activities that excite young people's interest and potential careers in science and technology.
We began in 1992 and since then have grown year on year. Annually we engage over 50,000 pupils, over 1,000 teachers and over 550 schools directly in our activities in the Greater Manchester area. We think it particularly important to engage with industry and seek to involve their employees in our work. We believe young people need to meet practising scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians who are steeped in real examples of 'STEM' in action bringing reality to the classroom.
We do not work on our own, we collaborate with all of the national and regional agencies that promote science, engineering, technology and mathematics as fundamental to the 21st Century.
We are recognised by the Government Departments and Agencies and the professional institutions for the expertise we have. We were a co-founding applicant in the North West Science Learning Centre along with Manchester Metroploitan University and St Martin's College of Higher Education. We are hosted at Salford University and offer an extensive programme of courses for young people, teachers and technicians, promoting interest in science and technology. Schools are familiar with our CLEAPSS lead courses for technicians.
We work with major companies such as United Utilities, PZ Cussons and the professional
scientific and engineering institutions such as the IET and IMechE to develop our activities.
We offer a number of national programmes such as:
CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology)
Nuffield Bursaries for Year 12 students
K'Nex - Young Engineers for Britain
Science and Technology Clubs
CREST Star Investigators - after school clubs
but we continuously seek support to develop and extend a number of local/regional/national programmes, which we believe are attractive to companies/organisations. We are always keen to extend our contacts with companies and organisations that would like to develop their social and community engagement programmes. We maintain a comprehensive database of companies and industries prepared to work with schools, teachers and young people.
We also host special events for organisations such as the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society and the IET.
The STEM CENTRE Greater Manchester is currently known as SETPOINT Greater Manchester and is a Registered Educational Charity (No.1040251)
