Futures Events complement Year 9 options and are ideal for career days.
Futures events provide an opportunity for today's scientists and engineers by linking schools with business, industry, colleges, universities and organisations. Young people have the unique opportunity to meet representatives from local industries, organisations and community groups to learn about the application of the science and technology they learn in the classroom in the world of industry.
The arrangements for the events are finalised following meetings with staff at the schools but the usual guidelines are as follows:
Normally Year 9/10 pupils
Pupils are divided into groups of 10 - 12
Usually twelve contributors support the event. These range from universities, colleges and hsopitals, community groups, national/ local organisations and companies
It is a structured event with groups 'carouselling' from one activity to the next. Sessions with the pupils last approximately 20/30 minutes. Where possible we like pupils to get involved in some form of activity. This works very well with both pupils and contributors.
Finalised details are forwarded to all contributors prior to the event.
What are the benefits to pupils?
Better understand the role of science and technology in their daily lives
Provides direction for young people who will be taking their 'option' subjects
Insight into the local expertise in colleges, universities, science, technology and engineering.
TRANSITION FUTURES DAYS
Some high schools like to have a Transition Futures Day where the pupils in their final year at the feeder primary schools are invited to the high schools for a day of fun and activitites. This gives a chance for the pupils to spend some time in their 'new' school and to meet some of the teachers.
We have over ten years experience in running this kind of activity and one local high school recently said ' Over the years we have built a positive relationship between yourselves and our schoo which has fostered an influx of new pupils to our school. This relationship will certainly grow and will stand us in good stead for any future developing events. Thank you and we look forward to working with you again
