Presenter Costs Only.

This is an activity for Years 3 to 8 and takes approximately 2 hours.

Our presenter will set your pupils a design-and-build problem (e.g. a bridge to support a load, a fairground ride).

Pupils are given basic ideas about strong structures and encouraged to plan how they will solve the problem. Using a class kit between 4, pupils now build their chosen design, altering and improving as they go along.

The presenter will give hints about the economic use of pieces and the use of strong shapes.

Building and testing a model takes approximately 2 hours.

This is a stimulating activity for boys and girls because it develops the skills of good design and functionality.

K’Nex Challenge addresses the following curriculum topics:

Design and Technology

• Design and make images and artefacts
• Review what they and others have done
• Identify what they might change in future work
• Learn about colour and pattern, shape and space
• Work in a team
• Follow a plan
• Assemble and combine components
• Identify ways they could improve their product
• Carry out appropriate tests before making any improvements
• Recognise that the quality of a product depends on how well it is made and how well it meets its intended purpose

Science

• Pushes are an example of force
• Forces are needed to make things move
• Strong structures have particular shapes and use components joined in particular ways
