Education Programme:

Manchester Science Festival will showcase the region’s innovative science research and practice to a large public audience, and returns again for 2008 running from 25th October to 2nd November. Click here for more information.

Past Events from the 2007 festival.....

We expect it to contribute towards the drive to get more school children studying science, technology, engineering and maths subjects, and also to increase levels of understanding of science issues within the general public and to help them to see the relevance of science in their everyday lives.

Free Manchester Science Festival Schools Pack

Do you want your school or education group to be involved in the festival? Then check out your Schools Pack. These packs will be distributed to every school in Greater Manchester during September, or you can register on the Manchester Science Festival website to receive one. The packs include:
• DVD containing worksheets, activity plans and internet links for lots of exciting, curriculum-relevant activities you can use during the festival period.
• Break down of the Festival programme, highlighting what’s appropriate for your age-group.
• Details of other science, technology, engineering and maths events in the area that you might like to get involved in.

“How Science Works”, 1-day workshop for yr9

Leading up to the festival, the Greater Manchester Science Network Group are offering major one-day events to each Greater Manchester Local Authority, comprising:

• an interactive, demonstration-packed lecture.
• a carousel of interactive activities from the FSTC, Universities of Bolton, Manchester, and Salford, Manchester Metropolitan University, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Healthcare Scientist Network.
• a hands-on “hot news” workshop in conjunction with the Manchester Museum.

These events were open to all secondary schools in the authorities, and are being managed locally by their host schools. For this we would like to thank:

Rose Bridge High School, Wigan,
Sharples High School, Bolton,
St Gabriel’s High School, Bury,
Wardle High School, Rochdale,
Royton and Crompton School, Oldham,
Westhill High School, Tameside,
Bramhall High School, Stockport,
North Manchester High School for Girls, Manchester,
Urmston Grammar School, Trafford,
Swinton High School, Salford.

Science Festival Schools Events Exhibition

During the workshop part of the How Science Works events groups of students will produce exhibit pieces based on a hot science news topic. The best of these will on the day receive a prize for their school and the chance to have their work exhibited at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry during the main Festival, 20-28th October 2007.

Other events:

There’s lots of other activities going on that can be accessed by schools, education groups, or individual students throughout the festival. Post-16’s might be interested in Engineering Your Future, a day of getting to know more about engineering, or 5-11 yr olds might particularly like the hands-on Forces exhibit at Touchstones. IF you’ve a particularly interesting science project that deserves some recognition, the CREST regional final might be for you. Check out the full programme for more exciting events.

The education programme would not be possible without its contributors, so a big thank you to: the FSTC, the Universities of Bolton, Manchester, and Salford, Manchester Metropolitan University, the Manchester Museum, the Royal Institution, the Museum of Science and Industry, The British Association, Bolton TIC, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics, STEM CENTRE Greater Manchester, the North West Joint Institutions Meetings and all the member institutions, and the Healthcare Scientist Network.

If you’d like to get involved with any education event then contact STEM CENTRE Greater Manchester on 0161 295 2602 or at stemsalford@aol.com
